Recent research took a look at the effects of the sweetener Stevia on diabetic rats. Extract of Stevia leaves was administered orally for 10 days.
The treatment produced a delayed but significant decrease in the blood glucose level, without producing hypoglycemia. The rats also demonstrated a loss in body weight.
According to the study, as reprinted on the website Green Med Info:
“Treatment of diabetes with sulfonylurea drugs (glibenclamide) causes hypoglycemia followed by greater reduction in body weight, which are the most worrisome effects of these drugs. Stevia extract was found to [have] … a revitalizing effect on β-cells of pancreas.”
